Article mocked person with mental-health issues

By Letter to the Editor on April 22, 2018.

Hooray for Gerald Morton (Letters to the Editor, April 11) who spoke about the trivialization of the incident reported by Delon Shurtz in The Herald on March 28 about the man who thought he was Michelangelo. The young man was vilified and mocked. His behaviour is obviously consistent with someone who is suffering from a mental illness, who is suffering delusions.

George Soshalskiy’s family must live with the consequences of this inane commentary on their son. George will have to suffer with the consequences of his actions and also with his mental health or addiction problems. He is indeed a hard-working young man, who has been caught up in a situation beyond his control. We can only hope that the justice system will offer him the help he needs to ensure that this action does not ruin his life.

I would strongly recommend that the author of the article take note of Mental Health Awareness Week this year, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6, to receive some sensitivity training, to stop the discrimination and stigma. In fact, there are online courses available.

As Mr. Morton says: “Crime É is not a matter of frivolity.”
