Camp Zama, Japan (May 15, 2018) – Community members attended the annual Summer Safety Day and Health Fair held May 10 at Camp Zama Community Club.
Several organizations, including Camp Zama’s Army Substance Abuse Program, the Directorate of Emergency Services, and Directorate of Public Works, set up booths to provide safety tips, informational flyers and demonstrations for the upcoming summer season.
Command Sgt. Maj. Will Holland, command sergeant major of U.S. Army Garrison Japan, said the purpose of the event is to provide resources and let everyone know Camp Zama is concerned about community members’ safety and good health.
Participants had the opportunity to check out the newest safety gears, try a hands-on fire extinguisher, and receive a briefing on heat injury prevention.
Spc. Jessica Anderson, assigned to Public Health Activity-Japan, said this gave her opportunities to interact with representatives who have dealt with safety and health for so many years.
“They can provide us with more knowledge than we may find in just classroom setting,” said Anderson.
Pvt. Charles Hamilton, assigned to Public Health Activity-Japan, stopped at the booth setup by ASAP and learned about different names of drugs and the damage they can cause.
Hamilton said this was a training opportunity for him to be away from work and to learn something new.
“Being medical personnel, it’s good to always have awareness of drugs and side effects,” he said.
RaShonda Labrador, program manager for ASAP, said she thought this event setting made it more comfortable and easier for Soldiers to talk to her about drugs.
Labrador said it’s important for Camp Zama to increase awareness among community members so everyone can ban together to enhance the resilience of the total community.
“We want the community to know what is to have a safe summer but also have a fun summer,” said Labrador.
