Freelance environmental reporter Paul Koberstein, a frequent contributor to Sustainable Life and The Portland Tribune, has written an exhaustive look at air pollution and health problems suffered by residents of The Dalles, 80 miles east of Portland.

His piece, called “Blood under the tracks,” questions the role of railroad tie maker AmeriTies at its plant in The Dalles, and the company’s use of creosote as a wood preservative for the ties.

Koberstein’s lengthy investigative piece, with reporting by Jessica Applegate, was published by Cascadia Times, the online environmental journal based in Portland that he edits.
