The upcoming Oklahoma Senior Games have an athlete with the uncommon first name of Ardith who has a passion for the unusual sport of “pickle ball.”
“Sometimes there are sports just for the fun of it,” said Ardith Phares, 74, a retired teacher and one of an expected 550 participants for the annual games that begin Sept. 1 and last through October.
There are 22 different events during that two-month time period that try to avoid conflicts with University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University football games, said Maureen Fitzgerald, Senior Games director.
Among the events will be archery, bowling, golf, cycling, horseshoes, power walking, basketball, racket ball, shuffleboard, softball, swimming, table tennis, track and field, and a triathlon.
