MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — State health officials say they are continuing to monitor an illness outbreak at a state prison that left one inmate dead.

Alabama Department of Public Health officials said Friday that there have been no new confirmed cases of invasive pneumococcal disease at Ventress Correctional Facility in Barbour County.

One inmate died after developing meningitis.

Health officials say they are continuing to monitor inmates and prison staff for symptoms. They also asked medical providers in nearby counties, where the majority of prison staff live, to report any suspected cases.

Symptoms can include fever, chills, stiff neck, headache, sensitivity to light, cough, chest pain or other severe respiratory symptoms.

The health department said outside visitors to the prison are at low risk of being exposed.
