During the month of December, it is common to be surrounded by the wonderful aroma of our favorite foods, all you can eat meals, lots of leftovers and many desserts. Add this to a busy schedule of Christmas parties, shopping, decorating, baking Christmas goodies, traveling, work deadlines and going to kid’s or grandkid’s activities which can bring about less time to exercise, lack of sleep and stress. This combination can be a promising recipe that can cause sickness and added body fat. Following are a few ideas of how to plan ahead, so you can stay healthy during the Christmas season.
Make Good Health a Priority
The added activities during the month of December can create extra stress on the body and cause lack of sleep. Studies show that a decrease in sleep can cause the immune system to not work as well. Experts say that stress robs the body of vitamins, minerals and enzymes, which means a greater chance of getting sick. Most people do not have “time” to get sick during the holiday season, so don’t lose sight of the fact that your health has to be a priority. When people don’t have good health, it is hard to have energy for a demanding schedule, tough to enjoy family and friends, and it can be more difficult to work. God’s word says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Plans for Exercise
With a hectic schedule, it seems impossible to think about exercise. At any opportunity, use the stairs instead of an escalator or elevator and park at the end of the parking lot so walking extra is the only option. Make an appointment for yourself for a minimum of 20 minutes of exercise several times a week. It is a great way to reduce stress and improve the immune system.
Plan Ahead for Meals
During this time of the year, it is important to try and plan nutritious meals, snacks, make healthy choices when eating at restaurant and try to buy healthy frozen foods. When cooking, make enough for two meals and freeze one for a busy evening. When shopping or driving, bring several pieces of fruit, nuts, or other healthy snacks along with a large bottle of water to drink. Studies show that drinking plenty of water and healthy snacks can keep a person’s energy level high and keep them from bingeing on foods high in fat or sugar.
With a busy schedule during the month of December, it is important to make your health a priority and make time to exercise, sleep, eat healthy and reduce stress so you can have a Christmas recipe for good health. If you are still having problems eating healthy on the go, then contact me for suggestions of organic fruits, vegetables and barley grass that have been juiced and put in a powder so you can have a healthy salad in a glass or capsules. I can also suggest herbs that help the body to relax during the day and sleep at night. Try not to get caught up in the busyness of the season and neglect to focus on Jesus, who is the reason for the season!
