The Path of Totality is, for one, a great title for a novel or movie (a sifi story for sure, perhaps one in which it is the statistical path through which spreads an alien virus that makes people smarter. I hope it gets here soon …). For another, it’s the path along the ground in which observers will see the Moon completely cover the Sun. For the first time in 99 years, this path will cross the continental United States. The 2017 path is a 70-mile-wide swath of the country that will experience a total eclipse.

Greatest Duration (GD) of the eclipse is the time when the total eclipse lasts the longest from the point of view of the surface of the Earth. You’d think this would be right where the the Point of Greatest Eclipse, but no. The greatest duration is a bit longer than the GE and roughly 50 miles west of the GE. NASA explains:  The GD “differs because of a combination of factors including the relative motion of the Moon’s shadow with respect to the curvature of Earth’s surface and to Earth’s Equator.” And, the space agency says don’t worry about enjoying the eclipse if you are not at the GD … “You can be hundreds of miles from the theoretical point of Greatest Duration and still enjoy totality lasting within a fraction of a second of the maximum possible.” In fact, the Duration of Totality on the coast of Oregon is still 1m58.7s.

You can play with this very cool mapping tool at NASA’s all-in-one eclipse page.

The “solar corona” will pop out at you when the moon completely blocks the sun and day turns into night … The solar corona is the upper atmosphere of the sun, which you normally can’t see because of either vampirism or, more likely, because the rest of the sun is just to darn bright.

Duration of Annularity (DA): Often added to explanations about the Duration of Totality, the DA is not a total eclipse of the sun such as the upcoming eclipse. The DA is the time during which the moon, too far from the Earth to totally block out sunlight, is ringed entirely by the sun; or “the maximum phase of an annular eclipse during which the Moon’s entire disk is seen silhouetted against the Sun. Annularity is the period between second and third contact during an annular eclipse,” NASA writes.

ISO 12312-2 compliant and CE certified, space-ranger approved and coveted eclipse viewing film! Everyone who writes anything about the eclipse adds very prominently that you are supposed to look directly at the the sun during the eclipse. KIDDING! Don’t look at the sun. It’ll burn out your naked eyes. Instead, go to this NASA page to learn more about what kind of glasses you’ll need, and yes they are the ones that meet the aforementioned regulations. NASA adds, cautiously, “If you are within the path of totality, remove your solar filter only when the Moon completely covers the sun’s bright face and it suddenly gets quite dark.”

Heliophysicists study things like “transits.” That’s the “passage of a planet across the disk of the Sun” or a star. When that happens, even very distant planets can be found and studied, which is how the agency’s Keplar space telescope team and citizen scientists have found thousands of exoplanets.

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Illinois public health experts are asking residents to take safety precautions before next month’s solar eclipse.

Illinois Department of Public Health director Nirav Shah says looking at the sun without eclipse glasses or solar viewers can cause retinal burns. He says ordinary sunglasses or homemade filter’s aren’t safe. Instead the department says those who want to safely view the eclipse should purchase special eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers. More information is available on the American Astronomical Society’s website.

A total solar eclipse is happening on August 21st and the people at NASA are taking full advantage of the situation to learn more about the sun. Ryan Sartor (@ryansartor) has that story.

Media: Buzz60

The eclipse is expected to last from about 12 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Aug. 21 in Illinois. Portions of southern Illinois are expected to be in the path of totality, or when the moon will completely block the sun. Totality in the Carbondale will last up to 2 minutes and 40 seconds.
