Music provides solace to many a person’s soul in their hard times. But in South Korea, like much of the world, there is immense stigma for seeking psychiatric help for mental health-related issues and pop music in the country rarely frankly addresses the inner turmoil of the artists creating it.
In recognition of World Mental Health Day on Tuesday (Oct. 10), here is a playlist of a few songs that delve into the dark clouds of emotion as portrayed by several of South Korea’s most popular musicians — many of whom lay bare their personal struggles with depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia and other forms of inner turmoil in the songs that follow.
