In our busy world of texts, meetings and calendar appointments, it can be challenging for companies to ensure that their employees are healthy and happy. Here are some ideas that employers can institute to help staffers become healthier, which could lead to increased productivity in the organization.

Here are my top tips:

1. Organize health and wellness lectures once a quarter to raise health awareness. Invite an outside health professional or exercise/diet motivator to discuss how to boost health.

2. Offer standing desks or convertible desks for employees, as these improve back pain and reduce unhealthy prolonged sitting.

3. Organize on-site vaccinations (e.g. influenza vaccinations, and pneumonia vaccinations for those older employees) and health checks for employees. It can be as simple as having their blood pressure checked, with standard recommendations on how to lower blood pressure with diet and exercise for everyone, and also for those with extra-high blood pressure, advice on perhaps seeing a health professional.

4. Organize a company health and wellness meal once a month – perhaps a healthy pot-luck lunch where everyone brings food or beverages, and offer a variety of heathy snacks in the break room or in the vending machine; suggestions include water, juice, almonds/mixed nuts, fruit, dark chocolate, granola bars, celery, bananas, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes and healthy popcorn.

5. Convert one meeting each week to a walking meeting, where you simply walk around the office or outside while conducting business. This will not only make the meeting more time efficient, it will boost participants’ exercise.

6. If the budget allows, reimburse employees for gym memberships to encourage exercise.

7. Sponsor the entrance fee for one race per year for each employee, or organize a companywide challenge in which divisions can compete by having the most participants in races – 5K or 10K races, half/full marathons, bike races, triathlons, etc. – in a year.

8. Set up monthly competitions with rewards for the teams with the most steps.

9. Invite a yoga instructor to do group sessions for interested workers during a lunch break.

10. Start a health and wellness suggestion box.

By making the time this year for employees’ health and wellness, companies can increase their employees wellness – as well as the firm’s.
